Saturday and Sunday Agenda

My head hurts.

And maybe yers does too. We are at the halfway point of this event and....one sec, gotta hurl......

OK. Where was I? Halfway, yes. This late e-mail is to remind you of tonight's event at El Chi's Bar located in the old Bakery building. This event is for 89ers only from 6:30pm to about 6:30-9pm. It is my understanding that this is a reunion tradition to have an event solely of yer bastard classmates and leaving the better half somewhere else. Wait, you are 89ers, YOU are the better half. At least for four days. So far I've collected a lot of $20s to pay for tonight and if not I hope yall will couch up some. Big ups to Andrew Elmer for kickin' in extra. That's a hint, people.

I have no planned speech or anything still so feel free to grab the m-i-c and get busy. I've invited a few teachers from the past so maybe they'll rock it as well.

After El Chi's you are on yer own as to where to go and what to do. Last night was brutal so you get a free pass if you can't hang another night.

Sunday we are headed to White Sands Beach at the end of the now paved Monashka Bay highway (past The Duke). This starts at noon and goes til whenever. The weather forecast is favorable but if Hurricane LeDoux blows in and dampens things I have the bowling alley lined up as a back-up. Call the 89ers Hotline at 486-0971 if you have questions on what the hell is going, what you should wear, and how to fillet a salmon with an ulu. BYOP: Bring Yer Own Picnic. In fact you might want to do this before Saturday night.

Good luck and good fishing,

Nick Sandin

The Friday Agenda

Assuming you survive Thursday night and don't have third degree burns from pallet ash...the party continues. With the powers vested me by Pres. Anne Marie I give you all the daytime to play golf at Bear Valley, charter fish, go to museums (the War Museum in the big bunker at Ft. Abercrombie is really cool. Plus, all of our graffiti has been cleaned up). Those looking for a bite I suggest the Powerhouse lunch box lunches located under the bridge on Tagura Road. I'm not kidding about this. The 1/3 pound burger at the Comfort Inn (Buskin River Inn where you acted like a total whore after Snowball) is the best in town. Martha's outside the Elks in the patty wagon has the best Mexican food this side of Canada.

Then if you brought family and wanna d o the family tahng with yer fellow 89ers, Aaron walton has been kind enough to open up his home to us out in Bell's Flats. Who is Bell and why did they get the whole place named after them? Anywho....

The Walton House
12364 Russian Loop Road
4pm to 7pm

Simple directions, lets see...

Drive to Bells Flats, turn right on Russian Creek Rd.  (by the "Speedie Kraft" store) and follow the pavement.  Turn right at the Panamaroff Park (stay of the asphalt) and continue following the pavement up the hill.  After the 'S' turn you will see the bus stop on the left. Stay on the main road and 500 ft down is Russian Loop Road on the right.  I will have signs or balloons or something to lead the way. It is a blue house about two Cory Johnson's tall. I wish he was coming, he's a great guy.

Lost? You can call Aaron at....

539-2609 cell
487-2180 home
486-4008 work

For the those who put drinkin' before family, like me, the other event starts at 6:30pm at

Kodiak Island Brewing Co.
338 Shelikof Ave.
(907) 486-ALES (2537)

They close at 7pm so don't be late. If we are lucky the owner or his slave will give us a quickie....tour. Unlike a lot of small towns with local breweries, ours actually makes really good beer. Not that watered down Rock Bottom crap, heeeeeeeell no. Liquid Sunshine is the standard Kodiak cold one, like Guinness is to Ireland. The new Sarah Pale Ale (or as a friend calls it, Bailin' Palin Fail Ale) isn't just a gimmick, it is less filling and tastes great. I stole that from somewhere.

From the Brewery we shall start our rapid assault of the downtown bar scene. I don't feel this is something that can be planned and if so the plan most likely would be abandoned so I can't say what order and for how long we will be at the other bars. Let's just try to hit Henry's (Solly's in 1989) first and go from there. Those of you playing catch up probably won't have a hard time finding us by trial and error since all the bars are fairly close together and we can skip El Chi's (in what was The Bakery when you got yer diploma) since we'll be doing the dinner there on Saturday.

Oh, this event is open to you and yer lover, homies, or rented date from Spenard. And if you ain't got nobody like David Lee Roth that's cool too. It's Kodiak, you might be better off alone.

Bar Translator
Then : Now

Solly's : Henry's
Tony's : Tony's (aka My 2nd Home) that has been remodeled a bit and has Jager now plus takes credit cards (didn't up until a few years ago)
The Village: The Village but it too is bigger and has Big Buck Hunter.
The Ships: AT&T Wireless. Their drinks SUCK!
The Breakers: Bernie's. They do that drunk singing thing there that begins with a K but I can't say it. Full of coasties.
Tropic Lanes : Still better known as The Lil Bar, next to the bowling alley. Still more drugs than a varsity basketball coach.
The Mecca: "Hell"... due to a altercation there two years ago I will not be joining yall at this point.
Beachcombers: Salvation Army. The drinks REALLY SUCK!
Anchor Bar: extinct
B&B : B&B. Where I'll B when you are at the Mecca.

DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. That is for teens! You are old and wiser now. Call SuperDave. Or walk.

* Note that Crab Festival Rules are in effect for this event. Those of you unfamiliar they are
1. Low Expectations
2. Stay Drunk
Rule 3. Go to Homer for the weekend if possible, does not apply in this case.

** Also note I'm off the market so when you get yer beer goggles on don't try to get in my sexy ass pants cuz you will get no where. I will be hard to resist, I know, I'm hotter than Mr. Platt's sixth cup of morning coffee but hands off. That goes double for you, Leonel.

The Thursday Agenda

(YES, THIS IS THE SAME AS AN E-MAIL I SENT, SO WHAT)

OK, I have ten pallets in my garage and I just got an e-mail saying my Seahawks season tickets are on the way.

And it quit raining.

Today is awesome.

Now I'm waiting for the sun to go down to target higher risk pallets at various locations around town.

Anywho, Thursday we party.

The action starts for families at the USCG base pool at 1pm. I've arranged to have the pool to ourselves with no coastie brats in sight for an hour and a half so townies should skip work and bring yer lil monsters. I can recommend hitting the MWR Pizza Parlor for a slice of pie or real ice cream afterwards, located next to the pool. The base pool is located where the totem pole is/was, where the pizza parlor was 20 years ago. Cross the runway and take the sharp right (but not on the runway of course), go about 300 yards and it is to yer left, right before the Biliken Theater. I wasn't able to confirm the bus yet but either way I'll be at the Food 4 Less (what you called Krafts) parking lot downtown at 12:30pm. If you see a short bus sittin' on 20's, that's me.

At 8pm Alaska Standard Time we shall ditch the kids and make our way to the Best Western (what you called the K.I., Westmark, Sheffield, etc) to the bar located on the second floor which is part of the Chartroom Restaurant that overlooks nothing but the top of Sutliffs. Its a comfy spot and not on our Friday bar crawl agenda. After destroying the place like Tommy Lee on coke and Red Bull we shall relocate to the old Rodeo Grounds beach about nine miles out of town to burn all the pallets I have in my garage and make Boyd happy. This is BRING YER OWN BOOZAHOL. For. Reals. You get extra points if you bring Rainier. You can hit the Safeway liquor store on the mall before heading out. It is open til midnight I believe. I like Crown Royal. Hint. Actually I will most likely be driving loads of pallets back and forth from my stash spot in the Flats and might not partake. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. There are pigs and they are deep on The Rock. Troopers, Base Swine, KPD, don't take a chance. Carry extra cash and call a cab. In fact, because I love you, I've notified my own personal cab to be on alert that night.

Write this down.

Cab #4: 2008 GMC Yukon XL (very new and holds a gang of mofos)
"Super Dave" David Barker
cell 539-5002

He will drive to the beach and back. He knows we are there. He's got me home in one piece 1000 times (most of those times were weekends).

Otherwise you can call the cab company at 486-4343.

I have no idea how long we'll stay out there but since we are old now probably not 5am.

I will send the Friday agenda tomorrow/Wednesday or go to www.kodiak89.com as usual.

Take pictures!

Getting Closer

Well it is creeping close to the main event. To be honest I'm looking forward to getting it on and over but whateva, it should be fun. I've got the bowling alley for a back-up for Sunday if it rains, otherwise we will potluck/BBQ at White Sands Beach. FYI: the road is paved now and there is a concrete restroom out there.

Anyway, I'm using my our money to pay for the deposits on the El Chicano gathering and the bowling alley so I'm going to ask each of yall to slip me a $20 so I can cover the expenses of the weekend. I'll pass a hat at the Saturday dinner or just corner you in an uncomfortable manner in the bathroom with a switch blade, either or. Thanks. I don't have much of a plan for anything at the dinner and I'm still open to suggestions. Otherwise it will be open mic or I will play Phil Donahue and walk around the room asking yall about your pathetic lives and how old you look now. I kid. I'm a kidder. No one has sent me any videos of their family to show so that will probably be skipped. I want to use this website for that in the future.

Those of you taking your family to the base pool at 1pm on 8/6/09/Thursday should leave early to get thru base security. They will ask you for a drivers license, vehicle registration, and insurance so have that ready. Then they will direct you to the MIL POL office on the right for a day pass. Pain in the ass but the pool has a shallow area for lil ones and a slide/high dive platform. It is just like Six Flags.... give or take 5 flags. I might be able to score a bus ride out there if you don't want to deal with all that or don't have a ride. More on that in later post.

My landline will act as the info line. Updates and whatnot will be at this number.

486-0971

I have also learned that the KHS Class of 1999 has scheduled their 10 year reunion the same weekend. I say we kick their asses. They were in second grade when we were seniors, they have a lot of nerve. I kid, I'm a kidder. Single 89ers are welcome to get them drunk and try and have sex with them as well. They got some hotties.

See to at the base pool August 6th in the afternoon or the Rondy  that evening.

Late June Update

1. I'm headed to Bristol Bay for two weeks. This wasn't my plan months ago when I took on this lil project so if you are looking for me I'll be back mid-July.

2. Frontier Air bought Era and have screwed us on web specials to the island. They are now around $269 RT, close to the cost of a regular ticket.

3. Does anyone want to volunteer to put an iPod together of 80's music?

4. El Chicano's will be the location of the Saturday gathering.

5. If you can NOT attend the reunion I'd like you to send pictures or even a two-minute video of your life I can share on a projector. We'd love to see how old you look now. You can e-mail the pics and/or video to sandinyerface@hotmail.com or snail mail to Box 1223 da da da 99615. Don't wait on this, do it today!

6. Those of you in town I want you to start hoarding pallets for the Thursday night burnfest. I'll even come get them from you and store them in my garage to keep them dry.

7. Has anyone seen Mark Dicang lately? Last I know he was in Anchorage. FIND HIM!

Reunion Outline

Here's the almost confirmed outline for activities.

Thursday, August 6th

Family Swim at USCG Base Pool 1pm

OPEN TO ALL unless you are on the sex offender list

20 years ago there wasn't a pool on the base. In fact, if you weren't a coastie it wasn't easy to get on the base but those days are no more. There is a kiddie pool and a water slide. The KHS pool is closing for good on July 24th and the new pool opens August 22nd which is located where the woods yall used to smoke and fight in.

Burn Mofo Burn 8pm

OPEN TO 89ERS and their squeezes so long as you are dating/married to someone who is 21. If your partner is 19, we need to talk.

Well start with some drinks at The Rendezvous Bar in Bells Flats and if the weather allows we'll make our way to the Rodeo Grounds to recreate history. I need someone with a truck with an obnoxious stereo system. Someone call Scorps.

Friday, August 7th

SPAWN OF LeDOUX's ARMY UNITE 3pm-7pm

OPEN TO 89ERS W/ KIDS and/or BRATS depending on their sugar content.

Aaron Walton will host a kid-friendly event at his home. Particulars and directions to come.

MISSION: IMPAIRED
6:30pm
OPEN TO 89ERS AND THEIR LOVERS

A walking tour of self-destruction to any and all of Kodiak's pubs, bars, clubs, and dark places starting at the Kodiak Island Brewery next to NAPA.

From there we shall hit:

The B&B
Henry's
Tony's Bar/Nick's second home
The Village
Bernie's (formally The Breakers)
The Lil Bar/Tropic Lanes
and for those not 86ed for life...
....The Mecca

Sorry, the Beachcombers is long gone.

Saturday, August 8th

I'm leaving the day open for people to do their own thang. I'll recommend you visit both the Baranof and Alutiiq Museums and the WWII War Museum at Ft. Abercrombie while here. Go to the top of Pillar and check out the brand new wind turbines. Might be a good day for taking fishing charter if killing one fish at a time excites you. You are Kodiakians, nothing less than a net with 500 to 1000 sockeye should make you blink.

GATHERING OF THE CLAN

LOCATION TBA: El Chi's or Powerhouse?
89ERS ONLY
6:30pm-9pm

Ditch the family and folks for exclusive time with the fellow survivors of the Kodiak Island Borough's last product of the eighties. We'll eat, we'll drink, we'll make bad speeches and cry. It will be awesome.

Sunday, August 9th

BEARS HAVE A PICNIC

Noon to 4pm
Ft. Abercrombie or White Sands
EVERYONE is invited

We'll go potluck style. I'm looking for a back-up spot of the weather is poopy.

This concludes the event you have feared for 20 years.

I'm trying to keep costs down and not ask for much help with paying for anything but I might need $20 from each of yall to help out so roll those quarters in that Crown bag in the kitchen.

See you in August

March Update

Some of you saw this same letter in an e-mail I sent our but I'm going to repost it here.

I'm going to try and get some hotel and bed-n-breakfast info on there but you can always go to

Those of you in Anchorage probably are already aware ERA Aviation often has a cheep Thursday-Monday web special every week. They have been $199 lately, as high as $229 and as low as $149. They come out the Wednesday before so if you live in Big City and want to roll the dice on a cheaper ticket you might want to consider that route.

You may have heard Dennis Wilson passed away very recently, March 15th. I did not know him but many of you did. There is a page for him set up on Facebook with more and I suggest you go there if you knew him.

And Kodiak did get hit with a foot of snow last night canceling school and even better my work so I can finally write to all yall. Mt. Redoubt, our 1989 Volcano of the Year, has posed a problem for travel to the island and state. Hopefully this won't go on til August.

Feel free to write back with ideas and suggestions for our time together this summer. So far I have a lot of party people calling for a raging bonfire one night. I'll see if I can find any Class of 1992 members, freshmen, to collect pallets and driftwood for us.

Being that I don't have children of my own I'd like someone who is more family oriented that I step up for more G-rated event for all those of you with kiddies. I can secure the Ft. Abercrombie picnic area for Friday the 7th or Sunday the 9th (there is a wdding there on the 8th so we can't get that date). We could hit White Sands for this as the road is paved to the end now and has a concrete outhouse Boyd and I can't burn down.
